Most new buildings or major changes to existing buildings or to the local environment need consent – known as planning permission.
Without a planning system, everyone could construct buildings or use land in any way they wanted, no matter what effect this would have on other people who live and work in their area.
Your local planning authority is responsible for deciding whether a development – anything from an extension on a house to a new shopping centre – should go ahead.
However, because we have been in the industry for over 30 years and we work closely with the local authorities we can help and guide you through the process.
Planning permission
When you need it
You’ll probably need planning permission if you want to:
- build something new
- make a major change to your building, eg building an extension
- change the use of your building
To find out if your project will need planning permission, contact your local planning authority (LPA).
Applying for planning permission
You can apply for planning permission online.
If your project needs planning permission and you do the work without getting it, you can be served an ‘enforcement notice’ ordering you to undo all the changes you have made.
